Using The Library

Learn about Gellert Library resources and services and gain basic research skills.

Welcome to The Gellert Library at Notre Dame de Namur University!

This guide will introduce you to our library and provide useful resources to help you succeed academically at NDNU.

The Library may sometimes seem overwhelming, but help is available -- in person at the Reference Desk, via email, via our "Ask a Librarian" service, or on the phone (650-508-3444 and 650-508-3748). Don't be shy; we're here to help you succeed and no question is too basic to ask.

Using The Library

The Gellert Library has an "open stacks" system which simply means that you are welcome to browse and check out (borrow) most of the library's collection without any restrictions. You can find books relevant to your topic by using the DISCOVERY search box from the library homepage. Once you have the call number and location information, you can go to the shelf yourself and find the item. For information, click on the Finding Books Tab.

You can find journal articles using the DISCOVERY search box from the library homepage, but you will need to log into your NDNU student account to access full-text articles. In today's American libraries, electronic resources are a very important part of research. More and more books, journal articles, magazines, and newspapers are available in electronic format and are accessible remotely.

Libraries also seem to have their own special language. Here is a glossary of words you might hear used in the library.

Librarians can help you identify information you need and can show you, step by step, how to find books and other materials in the library. If you have any questions or need assistance in using the library, please do not hesitate to email us or ask for help at the reference desk.
