How Long Does it Take to Receive an ILL Request?
Turnaround time varies considerably. Depending on the availability, lending library location, and shipping method, material often arrives within 1-3 weeks from the date the request was submitted. A system generated hold notice is sent to your NDNU email once the material is ready to be picked up at Gellert Library.
Electronic articles and book chapters can be filled within 7 days, but often arrive within 48 hours from the date the request was submitted. Electronic copies of articles and book chapters are sent to your NDNU email as a PDF attachment.
How Long Can I Borrow ILL Material?
The loan period for material borrowed through ILL varies and is determined by the library lending the item. Standard book loans are often between 2-6 weeks. When ILL material is checked out, the due date is displayed on a paper band wrapped around the item and can be seen in your online library account.
Use the Gellert Library Discovery catalog to search for the book at Gellert Library. If the title you want does not display in top search results, use the left side-bar options to filter your search by format, content type, or publication year.
Search results default to NDNU holdings. If you do not see the title you want, select the cell next to “Libraries Worldwide” under the “Held By Library” side-bar filter options. If you still do not see the title you want from the search results, continue to select filter options to narrow down the results. If you need assistance with finding resources or using the library catalog, please contact a librarian at library@ndnu.edu.
Once you find the book you would like to borrow, click the title to view the catalog record. If “held by other libraries” is displayed in the record or Gellert Library copies are not available (checked out), click the “Request Item through Interlibrary Loan” button to request a print copy through ILL:
If you cannot see the ILL request button, click the title to view the catalog record where the button is displayed below “Libraries Worldwide”.
If you are off campus, login using your NDNU email username and password. Complete the online form required fields and click the submit button.
Please note that clicking the submit button more than once will create duplicate requests. If you have questions, concerns, or would like a status update of your ILL request, contact library@ndnu.edu.

Renewing or extending the due date for ILL material varies depending on the lending library borrowing policies. Some libraries do not allow renewals, while other libraries only renew ILL material one time. If you would like to request a renewal, please send an email to library@ndnu.edu at least 3 days in advance of the due date. (Renewals cannot be submitted via your online library account.)
Your renewal request will be sent to the lending library for approval. If the renewal is approved, a follow up email will be sent and your library account will be updated with the new due date.
Unfortunately alumni are not eligible for ILL services through Gellert Library. We suggest contacting your local public library or current affiliated academic library for ILL service options.
